🛑Canada Says “No” to Indian Students

The 411: Canada is rejecting Indian study permit applications due to concerns about fraud. Ottawa uncovered thousands of fake college acceptance letters, mostly tied to India, and has since tightened screening rules. Indian student numbers are plunging, universities are feeling the pinch, and what was once a “study, work, stay” pipeline now looks more like “study, apply, denied.”

  • Canada rejected 74% of Indian study permit applications in August 2025, more than double the 32% rejection rate a year earlier.

  • Overall, study permit refusals sat at 40%, but India’s rate was by far the highest among countries, with over 1,000 refusals.

  • The number of Indian applicants fell sharply to 4,515 from 20,900 a year earlier as interest in studying in Canada cools.

  • Canada says the crackdown is about curbing fraud after uncovering more than 14,000 fake letters of acceptance last year, most linked to India.

  • Universities like Waterloo and Regina report steep declines in Indian enrollment, with Waterloo’s down two-thirds in the past four years.
